Henry "Hank" Schafer, 89, of Springfield, has died of age-related causes. Born in Wiesenmuller, Russia, to Henry and Anna Elizabeth (Dorsch) Schafer, he lived in Portland and later Springfield, where he co-owned and operated Springfield Sanitary Service and later owned Hank's Sanitary Service. He served in the US Army during WWII and was a member of VFW Post No. 40. Survivors include four daughters: Linda Davisson (and her husband Gary) of Springfield, Julie Hockett (and her husband Tim) of Washington, Vicki Appel (and her husband Dennis) of Vancouver, WA, Kathy Schafer of Gresham; two sisters: Esther Nagel of Lake Oswego and Lea Thompson of Tualatin; as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm Monday at Williamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Elizabeth Pinecker Filbert 23 Feb 1868 to 2 Mar 1944 Larned, KS from Merlyn Niedens
Elizabeth Pinecker Filbert was born Gnadenfeld, Russia on 23 Feb 1868 and died Larned KS on 2 Mar 1944. In 1889 the family immigrated to Mexico and after enduring extreme hardship for several months moved to a farm 4 miles south of Russell KS. On 3 Oct 1891 she married August Filbert. In the obit the following children were listed: Marie Clark of Denver CO, Anna Hartman of Kighton KS, Martha Foos of Kighton, August Filbert of Bazine KS, Pauline Kleveno of Bazine KS, Bertha Kuehn of Englewood CO, Jacob Filbert of BAziine KS, Dorothy Ely of Bazine KS. The obit did not mention that her parents were Karl and Katherine Pinecker or a sister who might have lived in OHurray.

On 10 Oct 1901 in Lincoln, NE, John Sitzman married Marie Rohrig. She was born 8 July 1882 in Wiesenmuller and died 17 Aug 1970 in Greeley CO. John was the son of George Zitzmann (1833-1887) and Catharina Reuter / Reiter. Marie was the daughter of Jacob Rohrig and Katharina Lich. See Ships List for more info

Met his wife in Lincoln, NE soon after she arrived in April 1890 and they were married at Lincoln on 7 Dec 1890. Moved to Denver soon after marriage and in 1903 moved to western Oklahoma Territory. See Ships List for more info

Adolph Otto "Penny" Pennacker 1910 to 1996 from Jeruslan Nachrichten Vol V No 2
Adolph Otto "Penny" Pennecker passed away 15 Oct 1996 in Gainesville, MO. He was born 3 Sep 1910 in Rocky Ford, CO to Henry Pinnecker and wife Marie (nee Pinnecker) Pinnecker who came to American in 1912 aboard the SS Haverford. Henry (Heinrich) was born in Alt Weimar and Marie was born in Wiesenmuller. Penny is survived by his wife, Cynthia and his sisters, Rosalie Pinnecker Eichman and Elvina Pinnecker Lyons.

Theresa Pinnecker Lehman 1912 to 1998 from Jeruslan Nachrichten Vol V No 2
Theresa Pinnecker Lehman, age 85, died in Clovis, CA on 3 Mar 1998. She was born in Wiesenmuller, Russia on 25 April 1912. She was the daughter of Adam Pinnecker who was born in Wiesenmuller and his wife Mary Elisabeth Knaus who was born in Aehrenfeldt. Adam Pinnekcer and both parents of Penny Pinnecker (Heinrich and Marie Pinnecker) were related.. She is survived by her husband, George Lehman of Clovis; her daughters Alvera Schletewitz, Barbara Miller, Dorothy Landrey, and Linda Seaberg; her sister Connie (Emma) Higuera; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Theresa came to America aboard the SS Albert Ballin in 1926. The story of the Pinnecker family escape from Russia can be read in Vo.l 1 #1 issue of Jeruslan Nachrichten.

Othello, WA - Alexander L. "Al" Miller, 86, a longtime Othello resident, died 24 Dec 1996 at Lakeridge Special Care Center in Moses Lake, WA. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Warden, WA. Stevens Funeral Home in Othello was in charge of arrangements. Rev Dennis Borgman officiated at the funeral. He was born 10 Mar 1910 in Stephan, Russia, to Henry and Mollie (nee Weber) Miller. He immigrated to the US with his parents in 1912. He married Lillian Muth, 19 Mar 1928 in Gering, NE.. He was employed with Great Western Sugar Co, prior to farming in the Nebraska Panhandle. They moved to Othello in 1970 where they farmed until retiring in 1975. He was active with Golden Gloves Boxing as a trainer and raised quarter horses as a hobby and enjoyed Senior Bowling. He was a member of the church where he was active with church activities. Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law Clarence and Donna Miller of Othello, Kenneth and Zelma Miller of Desert Aire, WA, Fred and Betty Miller of Othello, Wilbert and Sue Miller of Othello, and Robert and Alvina Miller of Othello; 20 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sisters: Ruth Meter, Lydia Kufeldt, and Freda Weimer, all of Gering, NE. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian, a daughter, son, 2 grandsons, a great granddaughter, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.

Anna passed away peacefully ono 4 Aug 1998. She was born in Russia on 15 Oct 1905. She came to America at the age of 17 and lived in Sanger CA until July 1997 when she moved into an assisted living complex in Fresno. She was a homemaker and lived to work. She made many blankets and afghans, embroidered and made more pairs of slippers than anyone could count. She loved the outdoors and thrived as she worked in the yard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip; daughter Irene; son James and her grandson, James. She is survived by her grandchildren: Janie Garcia, Judy Robverts, Lawrence Deaton, Sandra Collins, and Jody Deaton; her son-in-law Albert Hagopian and many great grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Sanger Cemetery on Thursday August 6, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Betty Ashley comments: Pictured in the photo of Wiesenmuellerin at Frankfurt on the Oder (in Wiesenmueller Verwandtschaften) was a pretty young lady in a white hat. I was told that she was not from Wiesenmueller, but had become friends with the single young man pictured next to her, George Fritzler. This info came from Lydia Pinnecker Schmidt who gave me the picture and George Fritzler's niece, Helen Fritzler Manbeck.

Henry Vogel 1883 Wiesenmuller to 1969 Portland OR from Rosemary Meier
Henry Vogel, a Portland home builder was b orn 3 Dec 1883 in Wiesenmuller, Russia to Jacob and Charlotte (nee Sommer) Vogel. He was baptized while an infant and after religious instruction he was confirmed at the usual age. He married Mary Buxman on 28 Apr 1903 in Russia. This marriage was blessed with 9 children. The family came to America in 1908 and settled in Russell, KS. By 1912 they had moved to Lincoln NE where he built many houses. Another move brought the family to Portland OR in 1937 where they lived at 3420 NE Rodney Ave. His wife preceded him in death on 24 June 1957. They had been married for 54 years. As on Henry aged 1 1/2 years and a daughter Molly Cronnoble also preceded him in death. Mr. Vogel died on 13 Dec 1969 in a nursing home of a stroke and kiabetes mellitus. His church affiliation had been with the Brethren Congregational Church on the corner of NE Mason and Garfield. His funeral service was held at the Little Chapel of the Chimes on Killingsworth. Burial took place at Rose City Cemetery. Those who survive him are: 5 daughters: Amelia Schwab, Emma Haase, Martha Benson, Helene Meier, and Mary Keil; 2 sons Fred and Albert Vogel; 17 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 2 sister: Anna Tripple of Mountain Home ID and Mollie Reisig of Russell, KS.

Mary Buxman Vogel 1882 Wiesenmuller to 1957 Portland OR from Rosemary Meier
Mary (nee Buxman) Vogel was born on 16 June 1882 in Wiesenmuller to Fred Buxman and his wife (nee Trot). Her marriage to Henry Vogel took place on 28 Apr 1903 in Russia. Her first child was born in Russia on 10 Feb 1904. The family left their homeland in 1908 coming to the US and settled in Russell, KS before moving to Lincoln NE in 1912. Ther marriage was blessed with 9 children all born before they moved to Portland in 1937. She died 24 June 1975 in Holladay Park Hospital at the age of 75 years and 8 days, in Portland OR. Her funeral was held at the Brethren Congregational church located at NE Garfield and Mason. Service was conducted by Rev John N Sauer and her remains placed in the Rose City Cemetery.

Charlotte Sommer Vogel Dietz 1862 Scherbakovka to 1940 Ft Collins CO from Rosemary Meier
She was the daughter of Michael and Katherine Elizabeth Sommer and was born 2 June 1862 in Scherbakovka, Russia. She received Holy Baptism and then was confirmed in Eckheim, Russia. She married Jacob Vogel of Wiesenmuller in 1880. She came to the US with her family in 1907 and first lived in Russell, KS and later in Lincoln NE. Theis union was blessed with 17 children of whom 8 as infants preceded the mother in death and 8 who mourned her passing. 2 sons: Heinrich and Jacob Vogel of Portland OR. 6 daughters: Mrs Charlotte Fritzler, Wellington CO; Mrs Anna Tripple, Hansen, ID; Mrs Katherine Herman, Lincoln NE; Mrs Pauline Jones, Kansas City KS; Mrs Molly Reisig, Russell KS and Mrs Katherine Elizabeth Weigandt, Lincoln NE. 43 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren. A daughter Mary Wiegandt age 25 was one of the 9 who preceded her in death. She married Jacob Dietz on 27 Oct 1920 who survives. They lived Russell KS for a year then moved to Ft Collins CO. She was a member of the Ev Lutheran Bethlehem Church. She died of carcinoma of the stomach. She died 13 March 1940 at Ft Collins CO at the age of 77 years 9 months and 11 days. Burial took place at Lincoln NE.

Amelia "Mickey" Schafer Vercoe 1908 Otis KS to 1995 Fresno CA from Betty Ashley
She was born 1908 in Otis KS and was christened at the Congregational Church in Rocky Ford CO. Amelia was the 8th child of George and Katrinlis (nee Miller) Schafer - the first to be born in America. She died 14 June 1995 in Fresno CA.

Marie Buxman Evins 1906 Windsor CO to 1996 Fresno CA from Katherine Buxman Wiest
Maria Buxman Evins was born to Carl and Maria (nee Weber) Buxman on 8 Jan 1906 at Windsor CO. She was baptized at the German Congregational Church at Windsor and also confirmed there later in 1920. On 24 Sep 1929 she married Myrble A. Evins "Curly". She graduated from Nurses Tranining School at Wheatland WY. For many years she worked as a Public Health Nurse at various CA State Health Services. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Survivors include: 1 sister Katherine Wiest, 2 brothers Albert H. Buxman and William R. Buxman, many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Kathryn Claus, 93, of Greeley, died Wed, Feb 10, 1999 at the hospice unit, Fairacres Manor in Greeley. A funeral will be held at 10 am Saturday at St Paul's Congregational Church in Greeley. Kathryn Jekel was born 23 Apr 1905 in Wiesenmuller, Russia to George Henry Jekel and Anna Elizabeth (nee Schwan) Jekel. Her family moved to Otis KS in 1911 where she was educated. In 1921 they moved to Windsor, where they farmed. She married William John Claus on 3 July 1926 in Windsor. They farmed until retiring to Greeley in 1972. Survivors include one son, Wilbert Claus of Greeley; one daughter Colleen Lohry of Ft Collins Co and one grandson Steve Lohry of Ft Collins. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Henry L. Vogel 1902 to 1975 from Ethel Lock. Henry L. Vogel, 73, McPherson KS died friday 24 Oct 1975 at McPherson Memorial Hospital. He was born 13 Oct 1902 in Bond County IL and married Minnie Scharf on 23 May 1931 in Hillsboro IL. He was retired from Santa Fe Railroad. Lived in McPherson since 1947. Member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors: widow; sons: Kenneth, McPherson; Robert, Aberdeen SD, daughters: Mrs Barbara Chapman, McPherson; sisters: Mrs. Anna Arzig, Mount Olive IL; Mrs Ida Barry, Litchfield IL; Mrs Ida Calbert, DeSoto MO; 9 grandchildren. J.W.Vogel from Ethel Lock. Word was received of the 19 Jan 1978 death of J. W. "Slim" Vogel, Wichita Falls, TX. Mrs Vogel wrote that her husband had a massive heart attack. The Vogels lived in Russell KS during and before WW II..; He was employed by Tom Allen under supervision of Adolph Boehler and moved to OK shortly after Boehler retired. Later they moved to Texas where he continued in oil employment. Mrs. Vogel is the former Dorothy Sanders of Gorham.

Edward J. Vogel, Hutchinson KS, 85 died 29 May 1996 at Dillon Living Center, Hutchinson KS. He was born 14 July 1910, Tipton MO, the son of H.P. & Catherine (nee Heinen) Vogel. He was raised in Wright. After he married he moved to Dodge City KS and lived there until moving to Hutchinson in 1990. Worked for Dodge City Coop Exchange for 29 years; retired in 1975 from Manager of Co-op Farm Store. Member Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City. Married 10 Jan 1940 Irene McCormick at Wright. She died 26 May 1991.
